Barcelona have emerged as the latest club showing an interest in signing Virgil van Dijk, according to reports.
The future of the Southampton centre-back is again the subject of intense speculation.
With the January transfer window about to open the Dutchman has been left out of Southampton’s two most recent matches. It’s led to a belief that the Saints will do business next month.
A host of Premier League teams have been linked, with Liverpool and Manchester City the two thought to be most serious about signing the 26-year-old. Arsenal and Chelsea have also shown interest.
Now Barcelona have joined the battle. Spanish publication Sport report that Van Dijk has emerged as a target for the Catalan side who are eager for defensive reinforcements.
‘I decided that was best for this moment. This is the reason. I am responsible for picking 11 players, and I intend to pick the best for the team.
‘Around him will be a lot of speculation and we have to wait to see what happens. Van Dijk’s future? I don’t know, we’ll have to wait, but I will repeat, there will be a lot of speculation around him. We have to wait.’
The report adds that Van Dijk is interested in a move to the La Liga table-toppers.
It’s thought that the former Celtic player will command a fee in the region for £70million.
